This engaging workshop begins with a brief introduction to the history and cultural significance of Mithila art, traditionally passed from mothers to daughters through generations in the Mithila region of India and Nepal. Participants will explore the symbolism behind traditional imagery, borders, nature-inspired motifs, and mythological narratives that make this art form unique.
Through step-by-step guidance, Nupur Nishith will demonstrate foundational techniques, traditional pattern-making, and methods for creating detailed border designs while encouraging participants to explore their own contemporary interpretations. The session is designed for beginners as well as art enthusiasts seeking a meaningful and mindful creative experience.

About the Art Instructor
Nupur Nishith is a USA-based, award-winning artist and curator known for reimagining Mithila (Madhubani) painting within a contemporary global context, blending heritage with modern expression. Working across diverse mediums, she transforms traditional motifs into innovative, culturally rooted yet globally relevant works that expand the boundaries of Mithila art today.
Nupur Nishith’s work has been widely exhibited and awarded, including recognition at international juried exhibitions such as the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, selected by a MoMA curator, as well as Monmouth Museum and Watchung Arts Center. Her murals and installations are featured in public and private collections, including commissions for Abigail Disney and while her Animodules with the Barat Foundation have been showcased at venues such as the Bridge Art Gallery and Nassau County Museum of Art and acquisition by the Manes Peace Foundation.
Her hand-painted piano for Sing for Hope was presented across major public art sites including Central Park, Liberty Plaza, and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, receiving national media coverage. Her work has also been exhibited at leading institutions including the Center for Contemporary Art (NJ), United Nations, Gracie Mansion (NY), Morris Arts, and the Asian Art Museum store. She has represented the Consulate General of India, New York at art and diplomacy exhibitions and international trade fairs.
A trailblazer in digital Mithila art, Nupur Nishith’s work spans film, design, and performance, with features in international platforms including Mithila Makhaan. Beyond her practice, she is an active curator, juror, and cultural advocate, presenting globally and contributing to leading platforms such as Mithila Festival USA and the International Mithila Women’s Summit, Bihar Business & Tourism Conclave.
She has curated multiple exhibitions, including the art program during the Indian Prime Minister’s 2024 U.S. visit, and has held leadership roles such as Vice President of Pro Arts Jersey City. A founding member of the South Asian Artists Association of America, she actively supports global art initiatives and folk art preservation with Folkartopedia while advancing Mithila painting through her platform, Creative Mithila.
